poacher's night
02:59
|
|
||
run little rabbit and you won't see me
standing in the shadow of the big oak tree
hide little fellow or you will be
caught in the meadow: cooked for my tea
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night
hop little bunny to the dappled shade
don't you worry and you'll soon be safe
down in the burrow all warm and snug
out of the cold: fattening up
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night
i'm a cheeky little chap you don't often meet
a tricky little thief with a vicious streak
a two-faced liar and a ladies man
a sneaky little plucker of the birds i am
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night
a brace of conies on the grass
showed me where to trace their path
and leave prepared for when they pass
wicked little snares to break their backs
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night
and i'll come back with the morning dew
to fill my sack with one or two
skin and salt and roast them through
boil little bones to make my soup
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night
so run little rabbit and you won't see me
standing in the shadow of the big oak tree
hide little fellow or you will be
caught in the meadow: cooked for my tea
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night
when the full moon's bright
it's a poacher's night

comfy bed
02:52
|
|
||
all those pictures in our heads
can come together and make sense
a collage of pink collisions
each one a blossoming raw vision
when the understanding reached is taken mutually as read
everybody needs a comfy bed
when reason is debated
has been ratified as stated
and agreements nudge our borders
toward the profit of new order
then remind the slippery diplomats of the caveats that said
everybody needs a comfy bed
whether selling in the boardroom
or begging on the street
everyone is equal in their horizontal needs
if they be kings or queens or emperors or pumping in a tent
everybody needs a comfy bed
instead of weapons manufacturers
invest in chiropractors
lest insomniacs turn vampiric
nocturnal living brings with it
a question of the climate with the needle showing red
everybody needs a comfy bed
everybody needs no matter what your head believes
so when you're feeling sleepy if you're gorgeous or a little creepy
it's a fundamental need soporific slumber doth proceed
both somnific heavy heads and those eager newlyweds agree that
everybody needs a comfy bed
everybody needs a comfy bed

another perfect day

|
||
another perfect day
the gentlemen of england are gathered on the green
while the willow and stitched leather battle in-between
bails and sticky wicket to keep the modern world at bay
and to treasure their tradition
for another perfect day
another perfect game
and at the end of an over applause accompanies the sound
of a meadow lark that hovers as shadows cast grow long
through an endless summer evening
of a thousand different shades
to keep the memory of england's dreaming
for another perfect day
another perfect game
but now as twilight falls around
and the crisp whites have all turned to grey
the score and two strides have become
mere real-estate valued as the runs are made per hour
to hurry the play
and to sell us another perfect game
it seems safe to say it's just not cricket these days
yes it seems safe to say it's just not cricket all the same
and though the echoes may be fading with the shadows on the green
of the bruised willow and leather
it's clear their passing means
that young men seeking careers compete for mercenary pay
where their fathers traded laughter
for another perfect day
another perfect game
on another perfect day

take your clothes off
02:45
|
|
||
why do shy girls in skirts ride bicycles
with one hand holding tight onto their hem
is it feminine reactionary multi-tasking modesty
or a nascent flirt who's courage failed again
take your clothes off
and look and you will see
you are the greatest beauty there can be
take all your clothes off
and you can truly be
a chilly kind of thrilly kind of free
why do quiet girls in one piece bathing suits
wrap beach towels round about their waists
is it some venal need to be a temporary tease
a suffragette who's choosing to abstain
take your clothes off …etc
it's a chilly kind of freedom
fulfilling that thrilling inner need
to take your clothes off and be beautifully revealed
to a chilly kind of thrilly kind of free
why do stern faced girls in flat shoes and uniforms
assume a sumo wrestlers dignity
is it a liberated dream to be a sexless equal team
with a secret stiletto fantasy
take your clothes off
and look and you will see
you are the greatest beauty there can be
take all your clothes off
and you can truly be
a chilly kind of thrilly kind of
giddy kind of feel you're living
shivering all a quiver
kind of free

hole in the floor
03:25
|
|
||
when you needed an angel she seemed to appear out of nowhere
and everything seemed suddenly clear
she sat at the table and turned 'round to you
as though she'd always been there
as though she always knew
you'd been lost and afraid
she spoke in a language of moonlight and wind
of a time and a place where our wishes begin
she smelled of sweet orange and of earthy spikenard
a fragrance of promise to lighten the heart
that's been lost and afraid
and so a bargain was made
then she fell through a hole in the floor
she was wearing the kind of smile that draws your eye
and makes you wonder what everything’s for
as she fell through a hole in the floor
she said you've got nothing to lose
your soul is no good to you
when you’re broken and lonely with nothing to prove
you're an empty shell cast up past the high water line
i can take you and make feel like a king through the night
and forget you're lost and afraid
and so a bargain was made
then she fell through a hole in the floor …etc
give me your pain and i'll rewrite the past
i'll enthrone you in glory and i'll be all you ask
and so you foolishly slept in her wicked embrace
and dreamed all those dreams you'd forgotten you'd made
being lost and afraid
and so a bargain was made
then you fell through a hole in the floor …etc
then she fell through a hole in the floor …etc

nobody like me
03:50
|
|
||
well i've got no money to give you and you've heard all my story before
you'll find nobody like me
i'm an original ridiculous misfit: i'm stubborn but i'm clean
you'll find nobody like me
it's strange being free
i've got an uninsurable laughter and an incurable cynical smile
you'll find nobody like me
i've spent half my life invisible: a voluntary absentee
you'll find nobody like me …etc
i have worn some different faces
and i have been around the world
i've accepted many changes
and made too few when i returned
and when i walk toward the sunset my eyes will reflect the dawn
you'll find nobody like me
i've a way of filling silence like the dolphin does the sea
you'll find nobody like me …etc
i've a singular way of giving expecting nothing in return
you'll find nobody like me
i am proud of my affection: sometimes mistakenly it seems
you'll find nobody like me …etc
i have worn some different faces …etc
i've a jaundiced view of history but i respect the past
you'll find nobody like me
i am intolerant of churches yet i've a spiritual side you'll see
you'll find nobody like me …etc
i have worn some different faces …etc
and i've been too clumsy to tell you of all the colours in my heart
you'll find nobody like me
yet all these things i'd share with you and i'd love you eloquently
you'll find nobody like me …etc
there's nobody like me: strange and free
you'll find nobody like me

telling it straight
03:19
|
|
||
whose voice is in your head when you drift toward sleep
when all of your thoughts have just fled
then which words do you hear
talking to you
telling straight
what kind of a world is the place you populate with fools
whispering pigs-bladder-on-a-stick-stories
instead of listeng to who is
talking to you
telling straight
if you cannot hear your conscience
then you can never feel the warmth
of the true friend or companion
if you choose to ignore who is
talking to you
telling straight
take a long hard look at yourself
and tell me what you see
has all the fear you guarded helped to imprison
or set free
the child inside that's
talking to you
telling straight
do you seek some deep collision
between the truth and your denials
to become an armchair martyre
through anothers sacrifice
talking to you
telling straight
talking to you
telling straight

we're alright
04:09
|
|
||
there are many different voices that are looking for a song
to give their hearts the wings to rise up
and be recognised among
the journeymen and travellors who apprenticed with the winds
to catch the colours in the silence
waiting shyly to be filled
and the currents of the oceans
are just movements in the moments
we spend chasing the laughter that begins
yet never ends
and the translation is never lost
between the writing and the thoughts
we share the way that lovers share themselves
giving all we've got
'cause you and i are here and we're alright
yes you and i are here
and that feels nice
'cause we're alright
we've been staring at the moon while the shadows of the day
still fill our minds with teasing clouds to remind us as we play
we've been sleeping with the muse
whose gifts we cherish as we choose
to sail the heavens on her words for eternity
like fools
and the currents of the oceans
are just movements in the moments
we spend chasing the laughter that begins
yet never ends
and the translation is never lost
between the writing and the thoughts
we share the way that lovers share themselves
giving all we've got
'cause you and i are here and we're alright
yes you and i are here
and that feels nice
'cause we're alright

strong foundation
03:22
|
|
||
making a monster
planting an orchard
staring at the sun
won't fool anyone
tripping a blind man
praying there's a god and
wondering who's won
won't fool anyone
high ideals mean nothing without strong foundation
justice is just gossip without strong foundation
commitment's always shocking without strong foundation
and walking out because it's without strong foundation
won't fool anyone
intensivly farming
choosing permanent scaring
children carrying guns
won't fool anyone
dancing in strobe light
booking a one way flight
forgetting to question
won't fool anyone
high ideals mean nothing without strong foundation
justice is just gossip without strong foundation
commitment's always shocking without strong foundation
and walking out because it's without strong foundation
won't fool anyone
exposing a weakness
diving with one long breath
denying what evolution's done
won't fool any one
trying to reinvent
hardselling the harvest
neglecting what's begun
won't fool anyone
high ideals mean nothing without strong foundation
justice is just gossip without strong foundation
commitment's always shocking without strong foundation
and walking out because it's without strong foundation
won't fool anyone
it won't fool anyone

sometimes
03:59
|
|
||
sometimes the days are cloudy
sometimes a warm sun shines
sometimes birds sing out all around me
sometimes all my songs have died
and sometimes when i turn around
i catch myself recalling all those days when i'd been down
and nearly given up
then sometimes i remember being loved
sometimes i am a good man
sometimes i lose my way
sometimes you will see me leaving
sometimes i choose to stay
and sometimes when i turn around
i catch myself recalling all those days when i'd been down
and nearly given up
then sometimes i remember being loved
i remember being loved
sometimes i can't stop laughing
sometimes i'm quiet and i am still
sometimes i am lost in doubt and lonely
sometimes i know everything
and sometimes when i turn around
i catch myself recalling all those days when i'd been down
and nearly given up
then sometimes i remember being loved
i remember being loved
i remember being loved
thank you
thank you
i thank you

nine dancing zebras
02:32
|
|
||
the man who was given nine dancing zebras on his birthday
climbs the mountain not to conquer
but discover enchantments waiting there
and cherish while enfolded in the rapture of the beauty
the butterflys
his gentle eyes
beholding wonders like a child
wild with innocence and wisdom
come from leaf and stone
the man who was given nine dancing zebras on his birthday
is coming home
the man who was given nine dancing zebras on his birthday
is a golden thread woven though the tapestry reminders of our lives
beckoning like a piper pied and fay
oh if freedom were a kingdom
then his jester sits atop the throne
wild with innocence and wisdom
come from leaf and stone
the man who was given nine dancing zebras on his birthday
is coming home
the man who was given nine dancing zebras on his birthday
has an artists heart that gives and gives
and never ever stops
and the colours of his paintings are not captured
but free to dance and show their pretty jewels
celebrating with emancipated smiles
wild with innocence and wisdom
come from leaf and stone
the man who was given nine dancing zebras on his birthday
is coming home

hole in my head
04:02
|
|
||
some stories have beginings
while some tales never end
but this thing it had no sooner started
than it was crumbling again
oh this must surely be a self-fulfilling prophecy
i thought this time that i would be released
from the entropy of hope
that keeps me hanging on a rope
choking the life right out of me
she ran away
she ran into the dark
and left me standing with a hole in my heart
i wish she'd not confused me
but been braver instead
and left me cooling on the floor
believing me dead
with a hole in my head
with a hole in my head
it seemed such a simple question
yet her words were menacing and soft
wielding suspicion like a handgun
cocked and ready to go off
without rebuttal or denial i am condemed without a trial
as a chameleon deciever with a silky little hook
baited with the promises that only she could hear
the injustices so brazzen
they're still ringing in my ears
she ran away
she ran into the dark
and left me standing with a hole in my heart
i wish she'd not confused me
but been braver instead
and left me cooling on the floor
believing me dead
with a hole in my head
with a hole in my head
the moral of this story is don't bother with the book
if you're expecting happy endings
and an everlasting love
'cause a romantic with a true heart will perdanticly persue
yet still forget the simple fact
that inspite of good intensions
ignoring wise advice that mentions
opposits will always attract
she ran away
she ran into the dark
and left me standing with a hole in my heart
i wish she'd not confused me
but been braver instead
and left me cooling on the floor
believing me dead
with a hole in my head
with a hole in my head
with a hole in my head
with a hole in my head

chin chin

wake up you blighters
you should be ringing in the change
wakey wakey sleepy people
you could be bringing down the hateful abstract politics
you bitch about
like suicidal icicles weakened by the sun
if you shine bright and hot you beggers
instead of playing dumb
so chin chin
here's to us
there's clearly too damn few
to fracture the reality of this bread and circus fugue
chin chin
here's to us
though clearly too damn few
bottoms up and down girls
let's make tomorrows news
if you cannot beat them
join them as a flagellant and muse
throw an act together
use your talent to bamboozal and confuse
your contemporary syndicate
with smoke and splintered mirrors
to stupify the crowd
breaking hallowed new ground over what's already ploughed
so chin chin
here's to us
there's clearly too damn few
to fracture the reality of this bread and circus fugue
chin chin
here's to us
though clearly too damn few
bottoms up and down girls
let's make tomorrows news
so lets toast the revolution that's sure to come around again
when some oter bugger can be bothered
to stand up and defend
objecdtions to the sell off
of moral high ground you developed
because it has such a lovely view
well if not today
tomorrow
when there's less for us to do
so chin chin
here's to us
there's clearly too damn few
to fracture the reality of this bread and circus fugue
chin chin
here's to us
though clearly too damn few
bottoms up and down girls
let's make tomorrows news
bottoms up and down girls
let's make tomorrows news

dancing in the rain
04:46
|
|
||
you've been living on the ceiling
feeling far away
giving up on dreaming
and trying to keep awake
because the colours have been changing
fading into grey
and all the coffee you've been making
tastes of ashes anyway
it tastes of ashes anyway
but just when you think you've fallen
the sunrise catches you
and flies across the bitter waters
to a day all bright and new
and sends a gentle chorus
that's familier and true
as tenderness comes calling
with eyes of deepest blue
with eyes of deepest blue
and the feeling takes a hold of you
and carries you away
it seems to leave you bold enough to choose
all the choices you never thought you'd make
like dancing in the rain
as the storm breaks
like loving once again
after heart-ache
now you're jumping through a halo
the colour of the sun
you can have no fear of failure
'cause you're living just for fun
the congregation of the rainbow
and the moon and stars above
shall attend you if you call
to celebrate what you've begun
and now you've left the circle
you have made the break and strayed
away from the path that hurt you
no more ceilings in the way
so you can rip aside the curtains
now that summers here to stay
and you know it's true for certain
you'll be happy every day
you'll be happy every day
and the feeling takes a hold of you
and carries you away
it seems to leave you bold enough to choose
all the choices you never thought you'd make
like dancing in the rain
as the storm breaks
like loving once again
after heart-ache
like dancing in the rain
as the storm breaks
like loving once again
after heart-ache
like dancing in the rain
like loving once again
like dancing in the rain
like loving once again
